The Not In OUR Space! campaign’s key objectives include:

  • Stopping harassment before it starts
  • Defining what harassment is (and is not) and the identification of the different forms of harassment
  • Emphasizing collective responsibility by encouraging subjects as well as witnesses to come forward when they experience or observe harassment
  • Empowering action through multiple reporting options (see the Equity Support Spectrum) including easy access to engager and Equity support networks
  • Educating key support personnel

Campaign Pilot Project

As part of the first phase of the campaign, a select group of theatres have volunteered to participate in a collaborative pilot project between Equity and the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres (PACT). This project will involve the delivery of a joint statement during rehearsals and the display and distribution of educational materials.

A designated theatre staff contact and the Equity stage manager will jointly deliver a First Day Statement articulating:

PACT and Equity are committed to the pursuit of respectful workspaces and support for those who have experienced or witnessed toxic behaviours. We will not tolerate nor condone behaviour that is meant to undermine the dignity or self-esteem of an individual, or which creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive environment. Artists and engagers must speak out against harassment and stand together in addressing problems when they arise.

In anticipation of launching the Not In OUR Space! campaign in all of our workspaces across the country, PACT and Equity will jointly monitor this pilot project and make any needed adjustments to material or process. More details to follow…
